Centrul National de Informare si Promovare Turistică Brăila Brăila este un județ situat în nord-estul regiunii Muntenia, în partea de est a României în Câmpia Română, fiind cuprins între văile Buzăului, Siretului și fluvial Dunăre, având o suprafață de 4.286 km². Reședința Județului este Municipiul Brăila, situat pe malul stâng al Dunării și la 200 de km nord-est față de București. Cea mai mare parte a județului este un Câmp Înalt (Câmpul Brăilei), foarte neted și încadrat din trei părți de lunci largi inundabile. Dintre acestea, cea mai întinsă este Balta Brăilei, cuprinsă între brațele Dunării și acoperită de numeroase bălti și gârle. Câmpul înalt, privit mai de aproape prezinta totusi o oarecare varietate. Mai întâi, prin mijlocul lui trece o vale, prea largă pentru lungimea ei (Valea Călmățuiului, fost curs la Buzăului). Ea desparte Câmpul Brăilei în două. Către Răsărit, Câmpul Înalt se termină printr-o treaptă mai joasă (Terasa Inferioară a Dunării). Conform ultimelor date oficiale ale INS (Institutului Național de Statistică), populația orașului era, în anul 2011, de 180.302 de locuitori, fiind al 11-lea oraș din țară după numărul de locuitori. Orașul a fost ocupat de turci între anii 1538-1540, fiind (raia sau kaza) de la 1554 până la sfârșitul războiului ruso-turc din 1828 – 1829, perioadă în care este numit Ibrail. În secolul al XV-lea numele Brăilei este amintit sub forma Breil, într-o mențiune a Cancelariei Voievodului „Ttibor din Transilvania”. Perioada de maximă înflorire o are la începutul secolului XX, când este un important port de intrare-ieșire a mărfurilor din România. Este accesibil navelor maritime de dimensiuni mici și medii. În această perioadă la Brăila se stabilea prețul cerealelor în Europa, la Bursa Agricolă. Brăila este printre puținele orașe din România unde se mai poate simți atmosfera începutului de secol XX, unde poți găsi linistea străzilor umbrite de platani ce domină clădirile a căror temelie a fost pusă de armatori greci, comercianți de toate națiile, avocați, cei care au făcut din orașul sfarsitului de sec. XIX începutul sec. XX cel mai mare port de la Dunăre și bursa agricolă a Europei.
